Artistic Program 2026

Our current program is characterized by musical diversity, curiosity, and mutual development. Building on the works we have already developed, we are expanding our repertoire and opening up new musical perspectives. In terms of content, the program covers a wide range from regional traditions to international choral music and major sacred works.

Starting with Carinthian songs, we first turn our attention to the Alps-Adriatic region and then beyond to the wider world. Choral music from different countries, cultures, and styles—from Europe to spirituals and South African music to selected pop arrangements by Queen and Coldplay—combines tradition with contemporary sounds.

Another focus is on sacred choral music. Works from the Renaissance, Romanticism, the 20th century, and the present day enter into dialogue and form a varied concert program with diverse timbres and forms of expression.

The highlight of the year will be the work on Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria for soloists, choir, and orchestra, beginning in September. Performances of this large-scale project are planned for December and will take the choir to stages in both Austria and Italy.

Choir

The KaufmÀnnischer Gesangsverein Villach, now known as the Alpen Adria Chor Villach, has a long and eventful history that is deeply embedded in the cultural tradition of the city of Villach. Since its founding, the choir has continued to evolve and has made a lasting contribution to the musical landscapes of Austria and the entire Alps-Adriatic region.

The KaufmĂ€nnischer Gesangsverein Villach (Villach Commercial Singing Association) was founded in 1873. At that time, Villach, like many other cities in the region, was experiencing a period of economic growth. The choir was originally founded by members of the commercial guild to promote camaraderie among business people and cultivate a love of music. It was founded in an era when civic associations, including singing clubs, were popular throughout Austria-Hungary. These associations played an important role in fostering culture and community by using music and singing as a unifying element. In its early years, the KaufmĂ€nnischer Gesangsverein focused on German songs, which were widely popular throughout Central Europe at the time. The choir performed regularly at municipal events and quickly became an integral part of cultural life in Villach. The choir’s early performances featured a repertoire that included both folk songs and classical choral compositions.

During the turbulent years of the early 20th century, especially during the interwar period and World War II, the KaufmĂ€nnischer Gesangsverein Villach faced numerous challenges. The political instability and economic difficulties of the era did not spare the choir. Nevertheless, the association managed to continue its activities, albeit in a limited form. This period was characterized by a strong emphasis on community spirit and support among members. During World War II, many of the choir’s activities had to be paused or severely restricted. However, it is noteworthy that, despite the adverse circumstances, the choir kept its members together and never completely gave up its connection to music. After the war, the association immediately began to resume its traditions and slowly reorganize itself.

After the end of World War II, the KaufmĂ€nnischer Gesangsverein Villach entered a phase of reconstruction. The post-war period was marked by a revival of cultural life and a new enthusiasm for music. In the 1950s and 1960s, the choir expanded its repertoire and opened up to new musical trends. This period of change was also characterized by a stronger focus on international influences and increased participation in international choir festivals and competitions. The choir’s reorientation was also reflected in its openness to new member groups. While the association was originally dominated by members of the commercial professions, it began to appeal to a broader section of the population and promote cultural diversity.

In the 2000s, the choir recognized that it was time for modernization and repositioning. This led to the renaming of Alpen Adria Chor Villach. The name change reflected not only a geographical expansion of its sphere of activity, but also an expansion of its musical repertoire and more intensive collaboration with choirs and musicians from across the Alpine-Adriatic region. The idea was to represent and promote the cultural diversity of this region through music. Under its new name, the choir focused more on a wide range of musical genres, from classical choral music to folk songs and contemporary works. This expansion enabled the choir to reach a wider audience and attract new members who were interested in different musical styles.

Today, the Alpen Adria Chor Villach is a modern, dynamic choir characterized by a diverse repertoire and strong regional ties. The choir performs regularly in Austria and abroad and has made a name for itself as an ambassador for the Alps-Adriatic region. With a repertoire ranging from classical works to contemporary pieces, the choir showcases the cultural diversity and musical excellence that make it an important part of cultural life in Villach and beyond. The Alpen Adria Chor Villach also plays an important role in promoting young musical talent in the region. Through workshops, joint projects, and collaboration with schools and other cultural institutions, the choir helps to pass on the enthusiasm for choral music to the next generation.

The history of the KaufmĂ€nnischer Gesangsverein Villach, now known as the Alpen Adria Chor Villach, is an impressive example of the development of a cultural association that has successfully adapted to changing social and cultural conditions over more than a century. From its modest beginnings as an association of merchants, the choir has developed into an important musical player in the Alps-Adriatic region, promoting the cultural identity of this region throughout the world. The choir’s continuous development and adaptability testify to its vitality and commitment to music and the community.
